It was not until the end of the 1950s that historians began to deal with the issues surrounding the Muslim presence and influence among the Akan. In his Ghana; A Historical Interpretation (1959), Fage included a short passage discussing the presence of Muslim merchants in the Akan forest (Fage 1959: 33-34), and this marked the opening of a new era in Ghanaian historical studies.
